#01 - I Made a CMS!
The beginning of everything
2021-11-01
Hello reader,
Welcome to my corner of the web! Thank you for making your way here.
I created this content management system to present my professional experience as well as share my knowledge in a place that is completely my own. A previous version of this site looked very similar but there was no CMS element to it which meant that I would have to access and edit the code to be able to add new job posts etc. Eventually, I got sick of that and decided that building my own CMS would make the process of updating my site a much easier thing. However, as all apps go, it started as a small idea that eventually grew into a much bigger project than I expected... why spend 15 minutes updating the code when you could spend 2 months trying to automate it right?
To clarify, this CMS is made totally by me using the rails framework which I learnt at Le Wagon. So why go through all this effort of custom coding your own CMS when there are more complete (and well supported) tools out there like WordPress, Drupal, Wix and Squarespace? While I could have used any one of those options, coding my own CMS meant another challenge to push my knowledge as a developer. There is also a considerable advantage to site performance when coding your own application vs using something like WordPress which has been made to consider a wide variety of options, which means more code, which means more information for your server and browser to have to work through before rendering something.
While there's still so much that can be done, If I continue to chase perfection, I will never actually publish anything thereby defeating the purpose of building this app. In future posts, I aim to talk about and explain in great length about web applications, useful tools like Google Analytics and Tag Manager, digital products making a big impact and more.
And just like that, my first official blog post on this site is complete! For a lack of being original, stay tuned, subscribe, hit the like button and perform a moon ritual of your choice.
See you next time,
Ilia
